The 5 Best Essential Oils That Aren't Just a "Fragrance"

Essential Oil’s Over the Years

Essential oils have been popular in cosmetics, not just for their enticing smell, but also for their shocking properties. They have been used religiously by many cultures and around the globe for centuries. Dating back to the Egyptian era, essential oils were used in ointments, cosmetology, and aromatics. Used in aromatherapy, essential oils were inhaled in a steam form and could help alleviate pain, anxiety, nausea, and insomnia. Applied topically, they were used to treat wounds, anti-bacterial, inflammation, anti-viral, and other conditions. For cosmetics, perfume and fragrances were initially made from essential oils. These age-old plant extracts have had widespread recognition in recent years, especially within the wellness and beauty field.

What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are extracted from plants through distillation or other mechanical processes, removing the aromatic compound from the plants, and in some cases is combined with a carrier oil to dilute the plant extract. There are more than 100 varieties of essential oils and each has different components that make it incomparable. When an essential oil is applied and absorbed into your skin, it can have an effect on the feel and look (although it is recommended you always patch test and dilute essential oil before applying it to your skin for the first time). Inhaling essential oils can stimulate the part of your brain that links long-term memory, behaviors, and emotions with certain scents. This is why some people believe that aromatherapy can trigger memories or emotions that can be connected to certain smells.

The 5 Best Essential Oils & What They Can Do For You

1. Lavender Oil

Lavender is one of the most common and versatile essential oils that can come to mind. It comes from drying the purple flowers of the lavender plant and soaking them over a span of weeks in oil in order to infuse it.  Lavender oil is also most used in cosmetics because it can help heal wounds, treat acne, reduce redness, tighten, and hydrate the skin. Those with sensitive skin prefer lavender essential oil to many others. Inhaling lavender oil in aromatherapy can promote relaxation, decrease anxiety & insomnia, and even help alleviate menstrual cramps.
